The life of the apostle Peter provides important lessons on striving – making great effort to achieve or obtain something. When striving under his own power, Peter had to be corrected by Jesus even though the world would call those acts good. When striving under the power of the Holy Spirit, he accomplished amazing things. However, he also demonstrated how we are all susceptible to falling back to dependence upon our own power. Near the end of his life, he wrote about how, with great effort, we can control that self-reliance better and yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
